With the climax of the morris calendar now only a week away, it is now an opportune time to reveal the schedule for the 13th Morris 18-30 weekend. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the resident Leicester men who have planned this weekend, under the guidance of Dan Corcoran.
The headquarters for the weekend will be the Birstall Scout Hut (address below). You should know the drill by now, but for the benefit of the newcomers, please make sure that you bring with you morris kit, a sleeping bag and roll- mat/camp bed, and a tankard, as well as your normal civilian clobber. The MORRIS SHOP will be in residence at the HQ, with a stock of morris paraphernalia, literature, and CDs.
Friday 17th (late afternoon/early evening onwards)
The HQ should be accessible from about 1800, but those arriving earlier should make their way to the Old Plough, which will be our secondary base of operations for the weekend.
A supper will be served, and beer will be available. At some point during the evening, the foreman will instigate a short but intense practice session to run through the common repertoire (Adderbury, Bampton, and Bucknell being the staple traditions). This year, we might have enough men who are competent in the rapper sword dances of the north east of England, but this is, of course, very much conditional on who turns up.
Afterwards, we shall venture out to the Old Plough for the remainder of the evening. Musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments; and singers, their songs.
Rise early, breakfast, and dress by 0945 – convene at the bus stop at the top of School Lane by 1000, to catch a bus to Leicester. The programme will then run as follows:
- 1030 The Highcross (J.D. Wetherspoon’s), High Street
- 1115 The Globe, Silver Street
- 1210 Cathedral Square, St. Martins
- 1245 The Criterion, Millstone Lane
o Lunch here if you wish (very good pizzas) at your own cost, or forage elsewhere.
- 1400 Swan & Rushes, Infirmary Square
- 1445 The Pub, New Walk
- 1530 The Parcel Yard, London Road
- 1615 The Exchange, Rutland Street
- 1700 The Salmon, Butt Close Lane
Return to Birstall on bus at 1740 or 1810. Feast (with an Indian flavour) in the Scout Hut, then the rest of the evening is your own to spend as you wish...
Rise (reasonably) early, and morning ritual, before personal belongings are packed away into vehicles for departure to Bradgate Park (no need to return to hall afterwards). At Bradgate Park we shall dance with other local morris clubs (tbc), in a number of situations.
Later on, we shall move to The Linford (public house) for a buffet lunch, and perhaps more dancing.
See you there!
